Week 1: Introduction

My name is Skyler Sikes and I'm a senior studying Letters. I'm passionate about languages (I study French and Latin), people, and politics. This semester I'm taking a couple of interesting classes. I’m taking Latin, History and Memory, The Rebirth of Israel, and of course Indian Epics. I love Letters. Most people think it is "just a major" for law school, but, for the rest of my life, I fully intend to use the ideas and concepts I've learned and developed within my major. I hope to become a lawyer. I'm specifically interested in human rights law and/or aviation law. I hope to change the world. It could be through law, politics, or helping to solve the foster-care system in Oklahoma. I'm excited about the future!
I have two brothers, two parents, and a miniature golden-doodle named Theodore Fitzgerald Sikes. Theodore (Teddy, as we call him) was named after a couple of my favorite people. Theodore Roosevelt and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Teddy Roosevelt is one of my favorite presidents. F. Scott Fitzgerald is my favorite author. His ability to compose an orchestra of words is unparalleled, in my opinion. If you haven't read This Side of Paradise, you're missing out. I also really love coffee - if it weren't for espresso, I'd be a zombie some days!

Anyways, I'm looking forward to this class because of the context within history that the indian epics have. I'm excited to see not only what I can learn, but also how I can apply it.

  1. Yay! I love meeting more Letters majors. I have a dear and close friend who is also a Letters major and I find it fascinating! I too love languages but have a tricky time learning them. Let's just say 3 semesters of Chinese, and a year in French didn't do much for me. That's great that you have a sincere compassion for your studies and have a plan thought out for the future. Not many people can say that they do. Also your dog has a better name that I do, quite jealous I am. Good luck in your studies!

  2. Hi Skyler!
I love how passionate you are about your major! I actually have a close friend who is majoring in Letters. She also dreams of being a lawyer! I think, as a lawyer, you will definitely have the opportunity to make a difference! I especially like what you said about solving the foster-care problems in Oklahoma. I'm a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and one of the coolest things about it is that we support CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA is an organization that provides representation through volunteers for neglected and abused children. You should definitely check it out!
I actually have a miniature Golden Retriever (part golden, cocker spaniel, and poodle). We named him Jack-Jack, and our golden before him was Dash. Have you seen the Incredibles? If so, I think you might notice those names! I think your pup's name is pretty awesome too!

  3. Hey Skyler!
I enjoyed reading your introduction because you seem to be a really drive, "knows what you want" kind of person and I love that!! Honestly I have never met a Letters Major and I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it seems to be really interesting from what you plan to do with it! I think it is really awesome that you plan to become a lawyer and change the world. I believe that we can all make a change or a difference, no matter how big or small! I have a golden retriever as well and I just adore her! I love that you named your dog after the people that inspire you, I think that is a really cool thing. I couldn't say the same for myself, I named my dog Sugar because she's so darn sweet! There's nothing better than some puppy love!

  4. Hi Skyler,
I think it's pretty cool that you study different languages and take a variety of classes such as Indian Epics and The Rebirth of Israel. It must real fascinating to learn about the world's different cultures. I'm assuming that you now know three languages so that's something we have in common. Also I think it’s really cool that Letters is your passion because I don’t know many Letters majors but the ones I know are in it for Law School.

  5. Well, you know I am so excited to meet people who study Latin Skyler!!! Even though it has been years now since I taught Latin at OU, I keep on with my Latin blogs and the Latin LOLCats and all that stuff. The world of the Indian Epics might seem far away from all that, but Sanskrit is one of the Indo-European languages, and the Indian Epics emerge from the same ancient epic traditions that gave us Homer, and from Homer we have Vergil, and on and on. So you will be getting more of that big picture in the class this semester. I hope you will enjoy it!!!

  6. Skyler, quick note: I just noticed you had not labeled this Introduction. That's a really important label - it will help people find your Introduction all semester long using the label list. You can edit the post and add that label, and then it will show up in your label list automatically! :-)

  7. Skyler, I knew your name sounded familiar! We are also in The Rebirth of Israel together! Is it not awesome to be in two online classes? I love it! Your dog sounds absolutely adorable! I have two shetland sheepdog and my family and I are getting another one in January. I am very excited to see the puppy even though I do not go home often.

  8. Skyler,
Your major actually sounds very interesting. To be honest, I did not know much about what Letters was other than it led to law school. The only language i've taken is Spanish, and it is not my forte. However, I have also admired people who really succeed in a new language.
My two favorite things: dogs and coffee. Both of which you mentioned in your Intro.
Your dog sounds adorable and i'm loving the name. I have a dog also, he is a boxer-mix named Bentley.

  9. Hello Skyler! You're the first person that i've heard of that's majoring in Letters. That's awesome! I bet it's so fascinating to learn all about these different cultures and ideas. I'm sure you'll use this stuff for a really long time and that you'll make a great lawyer. I feel like more lawyers should take more culture based classes that way they can understand the background and cultures of these people when dealing with them as clients and stuff. I also love coffee! I used to be the biggest coffee fan in high school and surprisingly my passion for coffee has weaned since freshman year in college. I almost just feel like I don't have time to make or purchase any anymore. I barely make it to my classes in the morning! Haha. Good luck with everything Skyler! I have a feeling that you would make a great knowledgable lawyer!

  10. Hey Skyler! I am also fascinated with different languages and how people all over the world communicate so differently. I was born and raised learning English and Gujurati (a language of the west Indian people), but I have learned and still am learning Hindi and Spanish. It is a fascinating feeling being able to communicate with people from different parts of the world. Good luck with everything!

  11. Hi Skyler! It is great how passionate you are about your major! I love learning languages too, if only to be able to travel more! French is a beautiful language. Latin sounds like it is difficult. I understand completely what you mean about coffee being an important part of life. My coffee maker was one of the best investments I have made. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  12. Hey Skyler. You seem to be quite passionate about your major which is something that I can really relate to. I also am very interested in other languages and have taken over 7 years of spanish myself. I understand the necessity and love of coffee, without it I don't if I could have made it this far at OU. Hope you have a great senior year and a promising career as a lawyer.

  13. Hey Skyler! It is nice to meet you!! I think being a Letters major is great, as well as your desire to become a lawyer. The Oklahoma foster care system could definitely use more people who has a true passion for other people and children. I hope you get to make people's lives better, not just as a lawyer, but in life. I'm sure you will and already have!

  14. Hey, Skyler! That’s so cool you’re studying letters not just for the sake of having a major for when you apply to law school, but to really learn from the material and content in order to be an even better person and apply it to your job one day. My friend is a letters major and absolutely loves it- she was pre-law but now she loves it so much she wants to teach classics. Anyways, good luck with the rest of your semester!

  15. Nice to virtually meet you Skyler! I love the enthusiasm you have about your major and what you plan on doing in your life for the betterment of society as a whole. I am a sociology major so if you go onto trying to better the foster care system in Oklahoma and beyond you would be one of my heroes! I share your love for coffee, I never used to drink it before starting college but it has become a necessity some days. Good luck with the rest of the semester and on your prospective career(s)!

  16. Hiya Skyler,

It's cool to meet a Letters major, and I think you're only the second one to whom I've talked. I like your interests in the Law specialties you've chosen. One of my best friends is an aviation management major, and I bet he'll need help from someone like you in the future. The only thing I've read by Fitzgerald was The Great Gatsby, and judging by his style in that I bet I would like the book you've recommended as well. Have a good senior year!

  17. Hey Skyler! I really enjoyed your introduction. It's cool that you're studying Latin. I took a couple of Latin courses in high school, but didn't stick with it. There wasn't much room in my schedule to add the extra classes that it would take to get a minor. I also think that it's cool that you have a miniature golden-doodle. My fiancé's family has a miniature golden that we all love! Anyway, it was cool to get to know a little about you. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

  18. Hey Skyler! Nice to make your e-quaintance, especially since we are probably the only Letters majors enrolled in this course. I'm about to graduate myself, but it sounds like you still have a ways to go. I studied Latin and Japanese (in which I have a minor). The Latin instructors at OU are fantastic. Magistra Walker-Esbaugh was practically a second mother to me. I took Rebirth of Israel, and I think that you'll like it so long as you know what you're getting into. I took it thinking it would be a history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, but it's more of a Jewish history course when you study the roots of Zionism. Anyway, good luck with the rest of your semester!

  19. Hey Skyler, hope your semesters going well. It sounds like you've been taking some pretty interesting classes. Especially that class on the rebirth of Israel, I wish I had looked into taking that class earlier. I couldn't help but notice that one of my good high school friends is in you profile picture, Eric Sarani, haha it's a small world. Well, hope the remainder of the semester goes well and good luck in your future endeavors.
